About KELLY SHIMODA
Shimoda Ceramics is the work of Kelly Shimoda. She works out of a studio behind her house in Oakland and fires in a communal space close by in Berkeley. She's had a few careers. Most recently a photographer before she started doing ceramics. She officially launched Shimoda Ceramics last spring and loves every aspect of the craft and running her own business. "After spending so much time making pictures that often only lived on a screen, it's so pleasing to be able to make physical objects with my hands." All of her work is handbuilding — she makes the pieces from folded contours and hand formed shapes, and as a result they have an intentional irregularity. Everything is inspired by observations of landscape, the natural world, textiles, and metallic elements. Each piece is a study in texture, both tactile and visual.
